about

Innovative drummer and composer Johnny Hunter and his quartet make a welcome return with new album A Consequence in Three Parts.

Continuing Hunter's exploration of the interplay between composition and improvisation, Consequence... is JHQ's third album and first studio recording featuring the updated lineup of Graham South (trumpet), Mark Hanslip (tenor saxophone), and Seth Bennett (bass). All are long time collaborators in various contexts, and the perfect musicians for Hunter’s compositional philosophies through their ability to inhabit various musical worlds with ease – from freer, more textural improvisations to the hard swinging grooves that the quartet has become renowned for across previous albums and live tours.

Hunter’s earlier work for the quartet leaned on the influence of the groups of Chris Speed and Jim Black amongst others; Consequence... builds on these foundations, drawing further inspiration from commposers such as Don Cherry, Roscoe Mitchell, Albert Ayler, Anthony Braxton, and Joe Harriott. As ever, Hunter cleverly makes the most of his musicians’ skills, giving them interpretative freedom whilst retaining a strong compositional identity. The music here is all based on the ‘twelve tone’ techniques pioneered by Arnold Schoenberg and others, which in Hunter’s hands results in surprising consonance alongside potentially jarring juxtapositions and unexpected resolutions.

Consequence... also features, in response to the music, the wonderful artwork of Angela Guyton and a booklet of poetry by Laura Cole (included as PDF download with all Bandcamp orders).

about

Johnny Hunter Quartet Manchester, UK

Drummer/composer Johnny Hunter formed his quartet in 2010 to explores the possibilities and challenges afforded by the absence of a harmony instrument. Compositions draw on the piano-less groups of Sonny Rollins and Joe Henderson through to those of John Zorn and Chris Speed, while leaning towards the freer, more exploratory approach of Ornette Coleman, Henry Threadgill and Joe Harriott. ... more
